When Tears Speak Louder Than Words – A Mother’s Day Reflection

When Tears Speak Louder Than Words – A Mother’s Day Reflection

The picture for this post was taken on September 20th, 2021. I had just moved my son into his new apartment so he could finish his final year of college. That day, I felt a nudge in my spirit—“Take pictures.” I didn’t realize that just three days later, his life would be taken. This would become the last picture we ever took together.

The emotional weight I carry some days is unbearable.

There are moments when I can’t stop crying, and truthfully, when have I ever been able to? Since I was young, my grandmother would ask, “What’s wrong with you? Every minute, you’re just crying. You come in like the weeping prophet.”

Now that I’m older, I understand more clearly that God wired me this way. My tears have always been a release, a sacred language between me and the Lord. And though He continues to teach me how to manage my emotions with wisdom and spiritual maturity, crying remains my default response. Not from weakness, but because it’s how I lay down what is too heavy to carry alone.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I know it won’t feel joyful for everyone. For some, it may be a reminder of loss, longing, or loneliness. And if you’re anything like me, maybe today you’re just trying to breathe through the pain, trusting God in your tears.

I want to encourage you with this: even in the moments when words fail you, God hears the cries of your heart. He understands. He’s near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and He keeps every one of your tears in a bottle (Psalm 56:8).

So tell God exactly what you need. Speak freely. Grieve fully. And believe boldly.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

To every mother, every grieving heart, and every soul silently breaking Happy Mother’s Day. You are seen. You are loved. And your tears are not in vain.

With love,
Felisha, The Carpenters Mother
